Managed by A4e (Action for Employment) and Icon Events, the Community Learning and Employment Project (CLEC) has already recruited 31 CLEC ‘Champions’.

These individuals from nine specific neighbourhoods – Hexthorpe and Balby, Intake and Wheatley, Edlington and Sprotbrough, Hatfield and Stainforth, Adwick, Doncaster Town Centre, Hyde Park, Mexborough, Conisbrough and Denaby – are now working within their own local communities to signpost and support fellow residents into learning and employment.

Donna Whittingham, project manager for A4e explained: “We’re still on the lookout for another 15 Champions and with the enthusiasm we’ve seen from our latest recruits, it won’t be long before these remaining roles are filled.

“With 17.1% of Doncaster residents claiming key out-of-work benefits there is a real urgency to raise awareness among this target audience about the hundreds of learning and employment options currently available.”

Each Champion receives free, one-to-one support from A4e and everyone who gets involved with the project will take part in a wide range of training and employment activities to help to secure positive, long-term employment.

Donna added: “The Champions are ideally placed to reach out to their fellow residents. Several are out of work themselves, some are lone parents and others are on disability benefits. They all have one thing in common though – they want to change their circumstances for the better and encourage others to join them.”

One such Champion is Miriam Shores from Hyde Park. Until last year, she was a successful entrepreneur running her own business. However, because of the stressful nature of the day-to-day running of her company, combined with the recession, Miriam suffered a nervous breakdown and lost the firm she had worked so hard to build.

Miriam said: “I jumped at the chance to become a CLEC Champion. It’s exactly the sort of boost I needed. I’m keen to focus on the mental health issues many people in the borough face and are hindered by when it comes to getting a job or embarking on learning courses.

“I know exactly what it’s like to lose everything you’ve ever worked for and have to start all over again. It’s a hugely daunting prospect but there are so many organisations, courses and support out there it’s simply a case of finding out what you want to do and going for it. I know I’m going to succeed and the people I’ve spoken to already in Hyde Park are keen to get on board too and make a real difference to their lives.”

Selina Mallin, a single mother living in Balby, is also a CLEC Champion and has already completed a goals course to help boost her self-esteem. Selina explains: “My previous job experience was restricted to warehousing. By becoming a CLEC Champion I’m able to do more courses, increase my skills and hopefully achieve my aim of starting a career in social care. By taking part in this project, I can then help others like me to achieve the same.”

For almost ten years the Foyer has offered safe, secure accommodation, training and a 24-hour support service to young people aged 16 to 25.

James Manton moved into the Foyer, based on Chequer Road, in February 2009 after family relationships at home broke down.

While at the Foyer, he has spent the past year focusing on his career pathway and employability. With a keen interest in IT, James secured himself a place at Zenos IT Academy in Sheffield.

The barrier to James attending the 22-week course was the daily cost of travelling between Doncaster and Sheffield.

Doncaster NDC helped James fulfil his ambitions by providing a £425 Moving On bursary to pay for his bus passes to and from classes.

James has now successfully completed his training course and his commitment and desire for success has been acknowledged at an awards presentation at the Zenos Academy in Sheffield.

He received awards for the Zenos Outstanding Improvement for the Northern Region and Zenos Outstanding Improvement Award for the Sheffield Academy. He also achieved qualifications in maths and English, and NVQ Level 3 Assessment and Certification, and a City and Guilds Advanced Diploma for IT Practitioners. He is a Microsoft certified professional and a Microsoft certified desktop support technician.

James said: “If I hadn’t received funding from Doncaster NDC I would not have been able to attend the classes in Sheffield. I would definitely encourage other young people to seek funding from the NDC because something as simple as a £19 weekly bus pass helped me change my life.

“Winning the Zenos local and regional awards has also really helped motivate me, and although I’m only in short-term employment at the moment I’m saving up to learn to drive and buy a car so I can look at IT-related job opportunities in Sheffield or Leeds.”

Jill Dunn, James’s support worker at the Doncaster Foyer, said: “James is a star and a real inspiration. He came to the foyer from a chaotic background but he has really turned his life around. He showed great determination, and the Doncaster NDC grant definitely helped him do it. We are all really proud of him.”

Bev Stoddart, NDC Director, also said: “Organisations which are helping to support NDC residents to move away from a life of chaos can apply for a Moving On bursary to assist their clients. James is the perfect example of how these grants can be used effectively to change lives for the better. We wish him luck in his future job hunt.”

Peter Beresford, of Ravensworth Road, Hyde Park, has been working alongside NDC since 2002.

Peter, 52, who became a DCDT director in October 2010, is also a project manager for The Carr House Allotments Enterprise (Chase Ltd) which has received substantial NDC funding from 2003 – 09.

NDC funding enabled Chase Ltd to provide interactive outdoor classroom sessions for schools, establish a community-based training centre at Carr House Allotments, support members of the community wanting to learn about the benefits of horticulture and land-based skills, and gain a recognised qualification in Practical Gardening Skills.

The social enterprise project also works in partnership with South Yorkshire Probation Service on its Community Payback scheme, allowing offenders to complete their sentence in the community, growing fruit and vegetables for the benefit of disadvantaged families in the local area.

Peter said: “I got involved with Doncaster NDC in 2002 as a resident and now that it’s coming to an end I want to use what I have learned over the past ten years to support DCDT in its future development. I want to help it mature as a community-based organisation for the benefit of local residents.

“I’m looking forward to being a director of the trust. I think I have proved that I have the knowledge and skills necessary to make DCDT a success. I have the ability to understand fairly complex information and take a strategic approach to developing solutions to problems. I also have an interest in the community, so I think I can really help shape the trust’s future.

“I also think it helps that I have direct experience of receiving NDC funding through Chase, and have seen first hand how it can change people’s lives. I believe the Carr House Allotments are a great community resource that wouldn’t be available without access to NDC grants.

“For me, it’s about giving something back to the community. For example, over the past few years Chase has been in a position to give away more than £7,000 worth of free home-grown fruit and vegetables annually to families in the area, which is fantastic.”

Peter believes the biggest challenge he will face as a director is ensuring the trust leaves a lasting legacy for local communities to build on.
“My main aim is to ensure DCDT delivers on its promises and that DCDT takes up the NDC baton successfully.”

“The DCDT needs to build on the robust foundation already in place and become a benefactor speaking and acting with local communities. The NDC has brought the community together by raising the spirit of central Doncaster residents and has shown them that the town is a place to be truly proud of.”

Victim Support is an independent charity working in partnership with the Home Office, police, voluntary and statutory agencies to help victims and witnesses of crime.

The majority of referrals are received from South Yorkshire Police and the Probation Service, Women’s Aid, the NHS, St Leger Homes and the NSPCC.

The Doncaster branch, based at College Road, has a special NDC outreach worker, who is a dedicated antisocial behaviour specialist, as well as staff responsible for attending court and meeting people in their own homes.

Staff at the branch regularly visit voluntary groups and statutory agencies to raise awareness about the issues faced by witnesses and victims.

The branch is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
